Third 24-hour hackathon at the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau with a participant record

Zwickau / Jena, November 15th, 2018 - Last week the keyboards glowed at the 24 hour hackathon "Lange Nacht des Coding 2018" (# LNDC2018) at the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau (WHZ) for the third time. And once more there was a new participant record to announce.

Participant record at 3. „Lange Nacht des Coding“

As in the past two years, the event took place in advance of the Alumni and Company Contact Fair ZWIK and was organized by the Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Physical Engineering / Computer Science of WHZ in cooperation with EUserv Internet and four other companies.

With a total of 95 participants this year the hackathon has firmly established itself in the calendar of events of the university. The word combination of "Hack" and "Marathon" stands for the implementation of projects under time pressure. In essence, the LNDC is an competition of ideas in which software developers and creative people design and develop different applications or programs without a topic specification within 24 hours.

International teams and a lot of innovative potential

As expected, the proportion of computer science students was quite high, but also students from other faculties, students from regional schools and employees took the opportunity to test themselves and make contacts with each other and with the economy.

This resulted in interdisciplinary and sometimes even international teams, whose different skills and abilities released much innovative potential and created 20 great projects and first prototypes. At the end of the event, all the results were presented in strictly restricted 5-minute pitches to the jury, consisting of the WHZ professors Prof. Dr. Grimm and Prof. Dr. Golubski and representatives of the organizing companies.

However, in order to offer the "Lange Nacht des Coding" a dignified conclusion and the participants the opportunity to relax, the award ceremony took place during the Warm-Up of Alumni and Company Contact Fair ZWIK last night.

Six projects convinced the jury

At the award ceremony in theatrium at Scheffelberg campus, the LNDC organizers finally announced the 6 projects in various categories, which were the most convincing for the jury.
For example, "Team Rocket" was awarded for a Python-programmed text-based adventure game in the "Creativity" category. The student team "Dows" got the prize in the category "Teamwork" with the projects "Face detector and 3D space scan with the Raspberry Pi".

With their Android application "Dice Generator" two brothers with the unusual team name "Ainz Ooal Gown" won the category "Simplification". As a project with the biggest "fun factor", the "Exception Händler" convinced with another dice game app called "Swipe the dice".

Patrick Rüpplein developed intelligent door signs for office or meeting rooms and wohn the “Best Practise” Award with his project "Smart Doorsign".

About the awarding for the "Best Overall Project" team "BAKETECH" could be happy this year. Their web application "Course Control" offers students the opportunity to influence lectures via anonymised voting options and to use properties such as determination of tempo or volume.

Looking forward to the next year

At the end of the 3rd "Lange Nacht des Coding" the teams and organizers agree: It was an exhausting, but extremely successful competition that gave the participants the chance to test themselves by concentrating on everyday problems and everyone is looking forward to #LNDC2019 next year.
